Paper Mache Ice Cream Cones!

Kindergarten and 1st Graders have finally gotten the chance to paint their ice cream cones. We did two weeks of pasting to make these beauties. Some students loved the feeling of the paste, while others...not so much.

Lake Champlain Endangered Species Project

2nd Graders have been studying Lake Champlain in their Social Studies classes. They've been learning about how we as humans impact the lake. This prompted me to look up endangered species of the Lake Champlain Basin Area. I was shocked to discover 29 different species that are officially endangered in our area. I shared the list of these animals with my 2nd graders as well as some photos of the animals. Students each chose one to draw. After that they each did a painting depicting the animal's habitat. Finally, students cut out their original drawing and pasted it onto their habitat painting. The final result is a beautiful mixed media image. Here are a couple of examples of the fine work our students have accomplished:

After finishing their Endangered Species project, students formed groups to create large scale murals depicting a Lake Champlain scene. Here's a video of a group in Mrs. Hooper's class working collaboratively on their mural.

Exploring Color Mixing with Tempera Paint

1st Graders began learning how to use tempera paints this week. We really focused on color mixing. Our students at PPS invented some incredible colors. We got sky blue, sweet peach, and even something we titled, "forest monster green."

Finishing Self Portraits K-2

There's only a few students left who need to finish their portraits after this week's studio work. We had fun learning about how to use watercolor and oil pastel together, bringing more focus to our lines. The displays in the hallways and library are stunning...thanks to all of my passionate and talented students.

Self-Portraits in Progress

Here are some of the Ms. LaRose's Second Graders' Self Portrait works in progress. I have been greatly impressed with how deeply the students have been paying attention to detail and zeroing in on their unique features.

Welcome to the PPS Art Studio!

For our first class, we discussed expectations in the Art Studio and got to design our sketch folders. I also put in a lot of effort to learn everyone's name (I'm still working on it).

In order to get to know my students better, and see how they present themselves to the world, our first project will be focused on the art of the self-portrait. We'll talk about the proportion of the face as well as the specific shapes that make up our eyes, nose, and mouth.
