Lake Champlain Endangered Species Project

2nd Graders have been studying Lake Champlain in their Social Studies classes. They've been learning about how we as humans impact the lake. This prompted me to look up endangered species of the Lake Champlain Basin Area. I was shocked to discover 29 different species that are officially endangered in our area. I shared the list of these animals with my 2nd graders as well as some photos of the animals. Students each chose one to draw. After that they each did a painting depicting the animal's habitat. Finally, students cut out their original drawing and pasted it onto their habitat painting. The final result is a beautiful mixed media image. Here are a couple of examples of the fine work our students have accomplished:

After finishing their Endangered Species project, students formed groups to create large scale murals depicting a Lake Champlain scene. Here's a video of a group in Mrs. Hooper's class working collaboratively on their mural.
